Facial recognition of everyone brown is probably the prime reason.
BUT IT'S ABOUT CONTROL
It’s also a way to deter theft by people who leave without buying anything. Not shoplifting, just leaving without buying.
A store can only have a limited population according to fire safety codes. Someone who enters then leaves without paying took up a space that a paying customer could use.
