The Dead Three have always been an uneasy alliance and Bhaal's trust in them was as brittle as ever. He does however see the benefit of having allies in low places. When the whispers of desperate prayers touch his ears, he comes upon a broken vampire spawn, caught in the thralls of a cruel master
A bit different than the prayers that come to him, he let that curiosity wander to discover his masters grand plans of performing the Rite of Profane Ascension. A glorious and diabolical ritual, unfit for such a pathetic man, but fit for a scion of Bhaal of course.
So Bhaal seeks out the creator of this rite, the Arch Devil Mephistopheles, and the two come to an... agreement (as much of an agreement you can have between a quasi-god and devil you see) to create a powerful spawn that will see to the rite and bring even more souls to damnation.
Iris's birth name is Cadeus, information they never learn unless they take the dark path, and is forced into the belly of a devout follower of Bhaal. The birth was gruesome, leaving the mother dead and a first meal for a young spawn. Iris was quickly thrown into an orphanage when found in the sewers
We know the goals of Bhaal, create a masterful spawn who will eventually usurp the Rite of Profane Ascension and bring true carnage to the world, even if they happen to reject his blood. But what does Mephistopheles gain from such an alliance?
Mephistopheles is known for his obsession with unique arcane relics. He seeks great arcane power and mastery over hellfire itself. As the ruler of the nine hells, he's anxious to secure that position through any means possible.
The death of 14,000 souls (double the rite) he will leverage that power to impose his will within the hells. Further, Bhaal's obsession with creating more spawn to enact his will and tethering Iris's soul to Astarion's, will prove to be his downfall.
When Iris completes the Rite and lost Astarion, there should've been a sense of relief. There is for some time, but his spirit still haunted them. Tormented them, really. To the point that Iris returns to Cania to bargain for his return.
Mephistopheles happily agrees to return him to Iris on the condition that Iris brings him the soul of a god. A legendary relic for his collection. Iris agrees and sets their sights on Bhaal. However, breaking into the Outer Plains becomes quite the challenge.
