Photo of a Red-Throated diver taking off on a loch in the Shetland Islands. These are big birds and have to have a considerable run up ,paddling their way across the water, furiously beating their wings to get airborn. This was in May so the birds were in their summer plumage with a crisp dark grey head grey back, white belly and the distinctive red throat which is hard to see from a distance as it is a dark red. the bird is trailing splashes behind it and in the background are green and orange weeds.
