Suspect likely the rail buckled when passed by train in front The Driver of that train, unaware We shall see

The train following this passing successfully with little to no indication in the cab but as rest of train passed.. Good grief

Least.. too late to do anything But suspect the rail still just within range of tolerance for the cab of the following train to pass - with little to concern Driver - then gave way

The bottom line So many people lucky today Temperature monitoring and line restrictions are taken very seriously indeed In this climate - and with physical temperature monitoring in many stretches precluded by budgets Anything can indeed happen because of the world we are now experiencing

That wasn't two trains, it was two units coupled together. (Biggest caveat possible: I'm not a railway engineer): my best guess is that the embankment slipped when the first few carriages of the train crossed it, leaving the trailing carriages toppling to their left in the direction of travel.

I’m not talking about the units There was a scheduled train in front I’ve checked Passengers at rear reported a huge jolt .. now did that get passed on 🤷‍♀️

I do not favour your assumption but it’s very possible The key is the train in front of this one / I’m certain that’s where we will find early warning signs Whether the embankment or rail buckling or both giving way

You have misinterpreted what I’ve said however To be very clear - suspect problems developed to a notable extent on this stretch when the train prior passed

Ahh, with you. Anyhow, as you say, delighted there are no serious injuries or worse.

In the world we have now entered Cancelled services - when temperatures suspected of reaching these unforeseen kind of levels - may be the only option We do not have a resilient railway nor the financing for one Today, we couldn’t monitor everything
