In this climate - and with physical temperature monitoring in many stretches precluded by budgets
Anything can indeed happen because of the world we are now experiencing
That wasn't two trains, it was two units coupled together.
(Biggest caveat possible: I'm not a railway engineer): my best guess is that the embankment slipped when the first few carriages of the train crossed it, leaving the trailing carriages toppling to their left in the direction of travel.

In the world we have now entered
Cancelled services - when temperatures suspected of reaching these unforeseen kind of levels - may be the only option
We do not have a resilient railway nor the financing for one
