The technology has come to fruition for the capitalist fascist regimes hasn't it? This shit was never for our benefit that's for sure.
Sounds to me like some of them might need bigger problems.
Steven Matheson · 0 · 45m ago
Again, we see corporations using Black Mirror episodes (15 million merits in this case) as an instruction manual instead of the dire warning they were intended to be.
Franklin · 2 · 1h ago
I’m reminded of being on a United flight a few years back. The seats had screens installed in the backs of the head rests. They blared advertising non stop and were impossible to power off. A few of us took to cramming the safety manuals over the screens just to give our eyes a break.

Marco the Maker · 0 · 11m ago
Same company that tried to sell subscriptions to already installed seat warmers. Not remotely surprised and will not ever, EVER, buy a BMW. Buy yourself an analog car or truck that was made before 1980.
José Antonio · 2 · 59m ago
Make it illegal. Regulate the car industry if we don’t want them to keep selling our data and forcing ads on us while we’re supposed to be operating a vehicle.

Super fun that EVs arrived at roughly the same time as all this enshittification so that dimwits would assume a causal relationship.

I think we’ll reach “utterly dystopian” when there is an option to pay more for your car for the ad-free version.
Shadetree Engineer · 1 · 2h ago
Judging by how that worked for YT, I think the ads will still keep coming, fine print will state your ads will be better personalized with the extra subscription.

the difference here is at least this *is* temporary, this will go away when disney's done with the marketing push. then again, on the other hand, if you liked U2, hey, you got their new album free digitally, so it was a boon for some people i guess

Not a BMW owner, but I have become very intentional about the aesthetic of my surrounding in recent years. An ad showing up on my dash or in my car would make me livid. I don't ever listen to the radio because I want the music and/or conversation with whoever I'm with to have its space.
Michael DiTullo · 0 · 29m ago

No one could have seen this coming....unless you lived in the 80s & 90s when *every* dystopian-future sci-fi movie showed exactly this. Once again, life imitating art. Now, imagine a "Minority Report" future where AI/Flock cameras identify you and personalize walls of targeted video. It's coming.

M T · 10 · 2h ago
I will be enjoying my pretty analog 2007 Honda Fit until it dies. It’s at about 280k, got some new spark plugs, and runs great.
Sharon Blady⁷ · 0 · 25m ago
No kidding! My cousin recently got a VW ID.4 EV, which sounded great until they picked it up, I got in and saw the big ass tablet mounted on the dashboard! Nope. Couldn't have that in my car. Love so many other things about the car, but I'd be asking for the non-tv screen option of that model.

I remember in the 1990s reading about a company that was promising to launch massive illuminated billboards into orbit, so that even from the remote Alaskan backwoods the night sky would never be free of a Coca-Cola logo two kilometers in length It really is not possible to hate these people enough
Hans Offen · 0 · 1h ago
it's why I do not want, nor drive a car with a computer screen. I do not wish to "own" (read "rent") a car that can be bricked on a whim by the company that sold it to me just to make me spend more money to "fix" it

WhatWouldShermanDo · 1 · 3h ago
You should be able to disconnect the car from the internet. It will disable some things completely--like panic buttons--but prevents this kind of bullshit.
The King Teen · 0 · 4h ago
It's bad enough on the gas pumps. And at least where I live, they've disabled the "turn off that noise!" option, which was 2nd button from the top on the right.
Ben Martin · 1 · 2h ago
I'm actually in favour of this. It is a nice way to internalize the cost of burning gas to non-cost-sensitive drivers.
Lady Mare · 0 · 3h ago
Happening to my sisters car. She’s so mad
This issue is not specific to EVs. Would/could happen in gas powered cars as well.
Sunbeam Virtuous · 3 · 3h ago
I wanna build a sporty EV with all analog controls and gauges. The onboard sensors would still be controlled by an ECU. Like having a car from the 90’s but without the gas engine or any screens. The most technology it’d have would be ABS, airbags, and traction control.
I want to roll my windows down again! And that wee triangular window on front doors that allow for juuuuust the right amount of fresh air.
Sunbeam Virtuous · 0 · 2h ago
Agreed! I once bought an old beat up (but still beloved) 1969 Chevelle. Its coolest feature was exactly that. And at speed, on hot days, it felt amazing
Those triangular windows existed solely for smokers to tip out their ashes and toss out their butts. They disappeared once smoking stopped being cool. Any beneficial side effects gained from those windows were purely accidental.

The real reason why legacy carmakers hate EVs is that the much lower maintenance requirements actually kill their business model. They count on a long tail of revenue from spare parts, in some ways it's like the razor blade model. So they're grasping for some new durable revenue stream. Hence, ads!
progsrock · 5 · 2h ago
Sure? Ads just for EV screens not ICE vehicle screens? Rather implausible.

Particularly around bicycles
That Toaster Tat Guy · 1 · 20m ago
Car makers don't make bank off oil changes & other routine services. Only if you pay for a new crate engine or other 4-figure job. My 7y/o Audi EV just had $900 in AC service and now its being diagnosed for a dead 10m/o 12v that may be the result ogns dying $2300 48V battery we didn't know it had.
That Toaster Tat Guy · 1 · 19m ago
Car makers make bank on you buying a whole new vehicle, and obsoleting or breaking features gets you to upgrade faster. EVs are a boon for that kind of marketing because 'the new one is $78 more a month but cuts charging times in half on road trips" is an easy sell.
Oh no! Their profit model! What will the stockholders do?!?

This is what happens when you replace marketing departments with Tech Bros and AI. My friend who used to work Film Marketing: "Pissing off your audience is a great way to empty seats " Anyone with marketing experience would tell you that this would backfire.
Netflix and Amazon can pull shit like this because they are not really competing with anyone, and the advertisers benefit from people being mad at Amazon or Netflix, not the advertisers who keep buying space. BMW doesn't have either of those factors going gor em
Ken · 20 · 4h ago
There’s nothing specific to EVs that makes them more susceptible to this, is there? I figured it’s just that they tend to be more tech forward than ICE cars, but I assume it’s coming for all cars

This has nothing to do with EVs. This affected all modern BMWs. If you don’t want your car connected it’s as easy as pulling down the headliner and disconnect the antenna.
Bob Loblaw · 1 · 3h ago
The issue, in a more general sense, is that people will keep their older cars to avoid the ads, the monitoring, and subscriptions. It will slow the transition to EVs.

Duh, unfortunately. I heard many years (maybe even a decade or two) ago that Google's ad biz was hitting a ceiling on search ads b/c there's only so many times we need to search. So they needed to find more places to advertise - and in-car ads while you sit in a self-driving car was their answer...
I'm angry BMW's share the road with people like me. Don't care if they have to look at spider man commercials.

Why the hell would anyone assume that SCREENS are a necessary ingredient in EVs (or cars in general) anyway? Screens in cars are the stupidest thing on Earth. They are a distraction. And yes they are prone to the predation of invasive media.
two words: GOOGLE MAPS once everyone got sick of having to hold paper maps while driving alone, everyone resorted to either using a car screen or phone to get to somewhere they never been before
And I wouldn't give up my map screen in my car unless I absolutely had to. It's extremely useful if you do a lot of driving for work.

Every single sci-fi novel and show predicted this. Every single one. You will see a variation on this in "Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die." And, jokes on us, since the US President is now spouting ads.

I love my 12 year old F150 more every day, dents and all.

You have to turn off the display, and leave it off. I cover the screen with a cloth, too. Sadly, no radio because of this.

Unwilling to buy some future Tesla because of Elon yanking Starlink away from Ukraine when he was helping the other side in that war.
Please return your eyes to the advertisement to resume your ride!

Is there any reason you couldn't just disable the modem?
dave0953.bsky.social · 0 · 6m ago
This has nothing to do with "EV's" specifically. Any new "connected" vehicle could potentially have the same thing happen. I bet the agreement is somewhere in the fine print of the purchase contract.
Navigation + Maps + Advertising…. Lol. And it’s part of your subscription. Nope, that’s not for me.
Simeon K Rabbani · 0 · 3h ago
There’s really no reason this has to exist. An EV should just be a car with an electric motor! Why does then entire car have to run off of an iPad? Nobody needs that.

Yeah, I like my car to be an ad-free zone. Being an older model, it still has a CD player. I use it more often than the radio. And with corporations behaving the way they do, I'm generally on strike with my money anyway. Their advertising dollars are WASTED on me.
Yes, that's a bad scenario. But keep our facts straight. This ad was not mandatory. It required drivers to select it.
Oh screw that

This is nothing new. My 16 year old 528i shows me annoying stuff on the dash without my consent all the time.

Not so different from when new cars come with 3 months of “free Sirius full service” then make it so difficult to cancel it.
Y'all lost this battle decades ago when you tolerated OnStar and SiriusXM in cars.
I’m not surprised.

This is one of many, many reasons my car is from 2002. I don’t even like the power windows.

Imagine when we get smart optical lenses, like contact lens smart glasses, and suddenly whilst your driving an ad pops up in your vision.

Why EV'S? As far as I can find, this is BMW. There are lots of others WITHOUT advertising.

Cell phone: a distraction, don't use it. Illegal Billboards and in car advertisements: tHoSe ArEn'T a DiStRacTiOn, ThAt'S jUsT bUsiNeSs" As if these companies need more ad revenue 🙄 god I hate it here

It's only a matter of time before I get sent a 6-figure offer for my bottom-of-the-line 2014 Toyota Camry with no smart anything. 😏 "You open the door with a key and start the car with a key and your music options are radio or CD player."

This is why I disconnected the cell radio in my EV as soon as I bought it. If you have a Chevy Bolt, the cell radio is on its own fuse, so you can pull that to disconnect it.
THANK YOU! My 20yo car has fully bricked 😞 and trying to infer which make / model allows **physical** disabling of cell radio is a Must Have!! Any tips on where to find out for other makes / models? What year do you have?
Den Antares · 1 · 2h ago
I have a 2023 Chevy Bolt EV. As far as I know, the EUV trim has the same wiring. The only thing you lose with disabling the radio is Onstar and the remote access app, but if you're disabling it you probably don't want those anyway.
Den Antares · 0 · 2h ago
I also keep a list of charging stations that don't require an app if you're interested.
jefg.bsky.social · 0 · 3m ago
Not sure what you did to disconnect your car, but for full privacy you probably have to pull the modem or cut the power to it, not pull the antenna. In my car when I pulled the antenna, it still got traces of reception near towers so I removed the entire modem.

After just seeing the movie I can confidently say BMW paid Sony a tidy sum to have their vehicles advertised in the movie

From the industry that brought us “would you like to unlock feature ‘brakes’ for $59.99/use?” Comes a new innovation: “Airbag will deploy after this unskippable ad.”
Keith Fagandini · 5 · 3h ago
There’s no mention of EVs in this article, just ‘newer model vehicles’.
