This doesn't surprise me. We as humans cannot (at least yet) replace the forest in the same manner as it existed prior. And our ways of removing and/or altering the forest are much different than the changes that would occur naturally.

A forest is not simply a compilation of trees, whatever management planned must take biodiversity into account. Actually, enhancing and supporting biodiversity ought to be the main focus in such practices.

A forest counted as area and a forest lived as habitat are different objects. The metric can grow while the thing it names thins out.
