#Poem - Submarine Graveyard

Submarine Graveyard

Our dances on the sand uncovered offerings,
Dead, black, scarred like whales,
That surfacing, once caught a billion vessels,
Scraping messages to their future selves,

We dragged them inland with a thousand slaves,
And levered them until they split,
Still glowing from their commissioning,
Along the lines of rust from short wars,

That took a billion human working hours,
And sunk them in a single yellow instant,
Denying their designated purposes,
With slow pans to ground in deeper oceans,

We wrapped our new and cleaner world,
In the warmth of these six new temples,
Raised them high to worship our new gods,
With the free and eternal fires of Bedlam,

And now, made languid by the lack of winter,
We are fewer now, keepers of black nothing,
Linking the fizzing guts of metal whales,
To our own, unforeseen and painful end.
