AVALON AV2T - 2pu sunburst solidbody electric guitar Japan 1968. Sold. Request-Japanese gtrs: Avalon made famous by The Shaggs. Unique sunburst, serious woodgrain & trem. Check The Shaggs demoing it: theshaggs.bandcamp.com/track/my-pal... www.vintagesilvertones.com

This is an Avalon model AV-2T, double-cutaway, solidbody electric guitar. It was made in Japan circa 1968. It has a translucent sunburst finish with two pickups. The neck is straight and all the electronics work properly. It is a great playing guitar which will be appreciated by collectors, players and, of course, The Shaggs fans. Yes, this is the exact same model guitar THE SHAGGS used for their truly unique sound way back in 1969. Could it be one of theirs? We will probably never know but you can still rock that incredible tone they achieved nearly sixty years ago with it. You too can discover the Philosophy of the World!. It comes with a good quality gig bag.Description from VintageSilvertones.com

The body shape is weirdly compelling, but I cannot get past the headstock.

It is a unique headstock. Back in the late 1960s, the Japanese guitar makers were really going for it to establish their own styles. The Teisco's pushed it too. This one is def on the unusual side. The logo is even a mother-of-pearl inlay. Strong detail work.

The more I look at the headstock we weirder it looks.

The headstock reminds me of Conan O'Brien's hairdo.

They're kind of wild guitars, eh. A very unique look that was very appropriate for a very unique band.

Cool guitar! Is that a German carve on the top? ✌️
VintageSilvertones.com · 7 · 7h ago
Yes it is a German carve. But, slightly different than the way Mosrite does them. Check this:

Ah, that's cool. I'm used to the more extreme Ibanez Bob Weir carves. That almost looks like a sucked lozenge ✌️
VintageSilvertones.com · 4 · 7h ago
I know what you mean. Those Ibanez's really went for the carve.

Looks like something Prince would play.

A real flickering flame of a guitar. I could imagine it painted in yellow, orange and red on the side of a hot rod. Looks seriously cool. Pickups? Weight? I'd better check out The Shaggs.

2 humbucking pickups (or extremely quiet single-coils). The neck pickup is strong with a smooth and somewhat mellow sound. The bridge is twangy but not super twangy with a smoothed out edge. Both together are strong but on the more muted side and not quite as loud as them separately.

We've had about 4 of these guitars. Unfortunately, I didn't weigh them. But, they weren't too heavy...best guest 7 pounds/3.18kg.

The Shaggs are eye openers, eh! They're a hidden secret! A wacky band. As has been said many times, they're so bad, they're great! Their father heard The Beatles & turned his kids into the next sensation! ;-)

I just can't get over those all-srtings-on-one-side headstocks...
VintageSilvertones.com · 4 · 7h ago
Several people have said the same type of thing with these style headstocks. I guess it's a personal taste issue. But, this one does bring all the strings back over the low-end of the neck. It is an unusual arrangement. The string tree probably helps balance out the tension.
