At the end of perhaps the best American novel ever written, John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath", a young woman who had just lost her baby is nursing a dying man at her breast. Thank goodness no MAGAt has ever read that novel because it would cause them to suffer a complete psychotic breakdown.

The activism from so many, on so many issues, in such creative ways, is refreshing. It makes me think that maybe, just maybe, democracy will survive the next two years, and beyond.

Trump made $2.2 billion in 2025 and is enriching the Epstein Class off the U.S. taxpayers’ backs. Our Children’s and Grandchildren’s futures are being destroyed to further enrich billionaires!😰
Jayme Ruimveld · 16 · 3h ago
That’s great because at the end of the day the “Moms for Liberty” are a bunch of political activists-who may or may not be raising children-and who believe that THEY have the liberty to tell you exactly what to believe, how to live, who to love, & what to read. All while doing just as they please.🙄

"The Grapes of Wrath" is the truth of the American Depression. John Steinbeck holds nothing back. He lays bare what covetious greed & what selfless sacrafice look like in the blazing light of day. Nothing is hidden in the dark.

If you're still MAGA, you've already had a complete psychotic breakdown and are no longer in touch with reality.
Gwynplaine · 0 · 2h ago
There you have it. Truer words have never been spoken. In order to become a steadfast member of a cult your mind must be erased and rewired exclusively with the cult's dogma. Once that has been accomplished you are essentially gone, possibly never to return.

When my high school English class was starting to read The Red Pony, my teacher took me aside, gave me a copy of TGOW, & said I might want to read this instead if I promised not to tell anyone, because she could get fired. After I finished, I asked her what people found so objectionable.1/
Heidrun · 3 · 2h ago
2/ I couldn't understand people who would be upset at that scene then (early 1970s), & I still don't.
That book is quietly powerful from cover to cover. It saddens me that it's not widely read anymore. I re-read it during the pandemic and it more than holds up.
Gwynplaine · 2 · 1h ago
Someone posted on this thread that they signed up at their library "hold this book for me" list for an audiobook copy of Grapes, & were put on a waiting list at #97. That suggests that this novel is STILL quite popular. I was both surprised & gratified to read that post. There is hope for us yet.
This is fabulous!!

I can't believe they banned Mouse. Like a lot of German kids, I was given it by my dad. It's sò important.

Why are you posting that on a thread that isn't about Trump *or* the "far left"? The non-story chapters in the Grapes of Wrath are some of the best arguments for socialism I've ever read. The leftist in your head is a centrist's boogieman, actual leftists include a lot of people who read Steinbeck.

Do you think Bernie is a Leninist, Marxist, or Stalinist? Nothing like attending a Stalinist Kibbutz during the Cold War. Bernie didn't seem to mind that his hero Castro wanted to point nuclear weapons at the US. He also blew off that Castro executed 17,000 Cuban nationals by firing squad.

That passage shocked me when I read it - but I was only ten years of age and living a secure life in middle-class England at the time! Great novel, and I’ve never forgotten it.
Gwynplaine · 11 · 3h ago
It shocked me too. Not morally, but viscerally, realizing that humanity at that point in our history had deteriorated to such an alarming extent.
wonkyjonty.bsky.social · 2 · 3h ago
I was equally horrified by the attitude of the cops, as back then our Police were unarmed, kind and helpful. In fact, I was taught as a boy to always go to a Bobby (old term for the Police, stemming from Robert Peel, the person who instigated a force of law enforcement), to ask for help.
Gwynplaine · 7 · 2h ago
The police in America, as well as private security goons, have always functioned as a paramilitary force for the wealthy and the connected. They have always been gifted a ridiculous and unlawful "qualified immunity" allowing them to assault, murder, rape, and pillage ordinary citizens.

It's fairly significant that the 1940 film version ends before things get really rough in the book. Dorothea Lange's photos of the migrant workers also show the brutal reality of their lives.

And the 40s version is still super bleak. That scene of the old woman being accidentally shot by the cops still haunts me.

Hollywood is fond of rewriting classic novels, & even history. The screenwriters & producers presumption that they are sooo much more intelligent than brilliant authors & actual history has always disgusted me. They butchered the Mutiny on the Bounty, Quasimodo's death, Frankenstein, & so much more.

I suppose they never heard about nor seen pictures onRoman Charity, a 2000 year old story where a woman breastfeeds her FATHER, condemned to death by starvation. It was a popular subject in the European Renaissance and Baroque art.
Gwynplaine · 1 · 1h ago
Yes, someone pointed that out earlier in this thread, and I'm embarrassed to say that it never occurred to me that Steinbeck was almost certainly influenced by that.
Aquil·les Poirot · 1 · 1h ago
Sometimes it just does not come to mind, even if you are fully aware of it. No big issue. I just pointed out the details because if those morons think that scene in TGOW is sex, and sure they do, I cannot even fathom what they would think if they were a father and her daughter.
