At the end of perhaps the best American novel ever written, John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath", a young woman who had just lost her baby is nursing a dying man at her breast. Thank goodness no MAGAt has ever read that novel because it would cause them to suffer a complete psychotic breakdown.

Someone posted on this thread that they signed up at their library "hold this book for me" list for an audiobook copy of Grapes, & were put on a waiting list at #97. That suggests that this novel is STILL quite popular. I was both surprised & gratified to read that post. There is hope for us yet.

I lived in Kern County when it was banned. It was banned because it was sympathetic to “okies” and Socialist ideologies.

Hollywood is fond of rewriting classic novels, & even history. The screenwriters & producers presumption that they are sooo much more intelligent than brilliant authors & actual history has always disgusted me. They butchered the Mutiny on the Bounty, Quasimodo's death, Frankenstein, & so much more.

Yes, someone pointed that out earlier in this thread, and I'm embarrassed to say that it never occurred to me that Steinbeck was almost certainly influenced by that.
