This style reminds me of Edward Gorey. I love it.

Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde is a masterpiece. I can't imagine what it would have been like for its first readers, who would have approached it as a *mystery*, unencumbered by pre-conceived notions from film adaptations, without knowing that Jekyll & Hyde are the *same person*. Talk about a twist!

If anyone knows about the initial public reaction to "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde" in the 1880s, I'd be fascinated to hear about it. (We often forget the longer, original title, which explicitly presented Stevenson's novella as the lawyer Utterson's investigation of a mystery).
