Every time i see a huge asphalt parking lot I think about the prospect of panels elevated above the cars, providing shade, and at same time creating energy. I'm sure some issues in setting it up, but doesn't seem that complex.

Good for supplemental power. You do have to clean and replace those every now and then, so it's not a one and done thing. It certainly does not eliminate the need for solar farms and/or other renewable sources.

Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia has had solar panels in most of Lot K for at least 10 years now. They used to have wind turbines on the top of the stadium in the end zones but took them down. I cannot for the life of me remember the reason.

We JUST got a taste of this in my mid-sized town, and it's FABULOUS! A big sports park had its large parking lot covered in panels and having the asphalt in shade has already cooled the place down. Haven't even seen the results of the extra power yet, but I already love it.

I’d say exactly as long as it takes to figure out who will pay for them. Such things need to be made mandatory to get a company to go from building a flat piece of bitumen with painted lines to a useful power source. Great idea, once someone agrees to pay the much bigger cost.

I’d rather parking lots were removed entirely and replaced with usable public spaces like parks. Or you could build housing, or businesses there. Yes we need solar but it’s a much bigger climate win to reduce car dependence and use land more efficiently.

I live in the Hi Desert of Southern California. While school parking lots are covered with solar panels, the parking lots for shopping areas are not. People sit out in their cars with the engines running 😡 in the sun. SO STUPID!!! Shade them, make power, stop wasting fuel & adding pollution!

In France it is a thing. The French government have decreed that any parking spot of 80 plus cars will be solar panel covered where possible. It’s happening.

Saw lots of solar covered parking on the Island of Curaçao this winter, that and lots of roundabouts. So far ahead of us.

If cities are footing the bills for sports teams, the least they should get out of it is green energy that saves over the years. The same years those same teams will ask for upgrades and improvements even after getting new stadiums.

When we finally get around to building on this scale for *useful* things, this tech will be vital. Keeping the interior climate stable enough for people, plants and animals will be vital...not everyone will be able to move when the climate gets hostile for much of the year.

Even the most expensive and high quality solar panels, positioned in the most ideal locations, tracking the sun all day, still cannot produce electricity on demand, or even half the time, and so aren’t really fit for any purpose. It’s hard to imagine sticking them on stadiums makes perfect sense.

There's even more potential. I've read about solar voltaic materials in roads and paints. Solar panels that run with train tracks in China. Every house can have solar if we make efficient enough panels. You still get some power generation even when it's cloudy and lots when it's sunny and cold.

It does make great sense, the cover keeps cars cooler by being shaded on sunny days and covered when it rains while providing free solar power to offset utility bills. Win-Win! The middle school near us put up solar panel covers in their parking lot years ago.
