UP Charts Clearer Path for Renewable, BESS and PSP Integration Into Grid - Saur Energy (saurenergy.com)

Uttar Pradesh is seeking to bring greater clarity to the deployment and grid integration of renewable energy and energy storage projects through the draft Uttar Pradesh Electricity Grid Code (UPEGC) Regulations, 2026. The proposed framework brings renewable energy generating stations, battery energy storage systems (BESS), pumped storage plants (PSPs), Renewable Power Park Developers, Lead Generators, Lead ESSs and Qualified Coordinating Agencies within a more comprehensive state-level grid framework. The draft seeks to replace the existing 2007 Grid Code and comes amid the increasing penetration of renewable energy, development of energy storage, and growing complexity of grid operations. It introduces provisions covering renewable integration, resource adequacy, connectivity, scheduling and dispatch, ancillary services, reserves, communication and cybersecurity. Key Proposed Changes One of the key changes is the integration of renewable capacity planning with transmission planning. Distribution licensees would be required to prepare rolling five-year demand forecasts, while generating companies would provide their expected generation capacity and power evacuation requirements to the State Transmission Utility (STU). The STU would also obtain renewable capacity addition plans from UPNEDA. The proposed framework would require users and stakeholders to provide planning data for the following five years, enabling the STU to prepare a rolling transmission plan...
