There are fairly simple, halfway solutions before an outright cancellation.
In Stavanger, in Norway, the "old town" is old, timber housing, so the main fireworks at New Year are launched . . . from a barge well out in the bay, over water that doesn't tend to catch fire.
What kind of fecking eejits set off fireworks, of all things, in the midst of one of the hottest (if not THE hottest) & driest summers ever in the UK?
I mean I get it's an organised competition but did no one even consider, you know, postponing it?
Apparently considered ok
What could possibly go wrong? Except what did, obviously.
I despair sometimes.
Utterly irresponsible
Found it hard to believe that a council organised such a dangerous display setting an atrocious example to others. Fireworks, firepits, any flames or even a spark could set off a wildfire. They are a threat to people, property & importantly, our diminishingwildlife.
Nutcases. Burnham! Ban fireworks now!!!!
I won't have a BBQ in the garden at the moment.
How was this allowed to happen ?
Why would anyone think this sort of display is acceptable during a time when all the ground, grass and foliage is dry as a bone. Absolutely irresponsible!
Good grief, why would you hold that event in this weather?
Because £££
And Andy Burham needs to convene a COBRA meeting to come up with a policy of hypothetically eventually looking at banning portable BBQs?
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pith and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry
And lose the name of action.
You’d think they’d have insurance for cancellation.
Unbelievable that this went ahead - idiots!
There are a few seaside resorts that hold these "Championships" regularly through the summer peak holiday period as a bonus attraction.
I lived in Weymouth where these featured every Friday, every summer.
PS they are not really any form of "international competition"
Oops!!
straight to jail. absolute morons
That should've been the sign NOT to go ahead.
I've seen this a few times. It's a pretty good display. But to hold it now, when everything is bone dry.... yeah, twats.
