Our photograph captures the dramatic partial solar eclipse seen over Ireland on Wednesday, 12 August 2026. During this rare event, the Moon passed in front of the Sun, leaving only a brilliant crescent of sunlight visible. Ireland experienced one of the deepest partial phases of the eclipse, with roughly 94% or more of the Sun obscured in many locations. At the centre of the image, the remaining crescent of the Sun glows intensely through a bank of thick, turbulent clouds. Its brilliant white light is surrounded by a soft golden halo, creating the impression of a glowing celestial sliver emerging from the darkness. The sky is filled with layers of heavy, textured clouds, ranging from pale grey and silver to almost black. Some cloud edges are brightly illuminated by the hidden Sun, while deeper layers appear brooding and shadowy. Dark, silhouetted branches and leaves frame the scene in the foreground, their delicate shapes contrasting strongly with the luminous clouds behind them. Several leaves appear almost black against the brightness of the eclipse.The overall effect is atmospheric and otherworldly. A fleeting moment when daylight seems subdued and the familiar Irish sky takes on an almost nocturnal character. Our photograph beautifully captures the sense of rarity and mystery surrounding this exceptional eclipse, which was the most significant visible from Ireland since 1999. Finally, today picture is finished with a simple white border frame.
