#Shakespeare and #Music people - can you help me? I'm trying to find out who composed the commonly used tune for Feste's song from #TwelfthNight - The Rain It Raineth Every Day. If not the composer, then at least when it's thought to date from. Recording below so you know the one I mean. Thank you🔊

According to Ard3: 'The earliest known setting is Joseph Vernon’s, published in The New Songs in the Pantomime of the Witch … composed by J. Vernon (1772); this is probably an arrangement of a traditional tune, however, that may go back to the Elizabethan era. 1/2

The version of Vernon’s setting given here in E minor (see p.344) first appeared in F.W. Sternfeld’s Music in Shakespearean Tragedy (1963)'. @oldfortunatus.bsky.social probably knows more... 2/2

I think there's a little more info in Peter Seng's book, 'The Vocal Songs in the Plays of Shakespeare'. My guess is that it's a late 18thC tune, possibly composed by Vernon.
