Mushroom Staircase for #ForestFriday Let's focus on another special feature of woodland spaces today - mushrooms! #EastCoastKin #ECK #photography #mushrooms #MereSandsWood #Lancashire #trees #nature #naturephotography #fungi #fungifriends (iPhone camera)

Look at the size of these! Like dinner plates! They remind me of stairs going up the tree trunk, a bit like the steep, single step ones in Dutch homes that are a little intimidating at first.

Image shows a large tree trunk with gnarly, deep brown bark which dominates the frame. On the right hand side, about a quarter of the image, is a vertical stripe of the leaf-filled forest beyond. The tree trunk has a deep grove up the middle from which are growing two huge mushrooms that fan out in layers, a bit like a ra-ra skirt of you remember those. Each mushroom is a chestnut colour but looks dusty with a white edge on the bottom layer. On the left of the frame, some green oak leaves appear in view. At least I think they're oak leaves!

Took the photograph in Mere Sands Wood close to the Lancashire-Merseyside border. It's a stunning wood with a large lake (or large to me) and meadows for butterflies, dragonflies and insects.

Great shot AnnaLois. So interesting. They do look like steps. I don’t think I’ve seen these ones before. 🤔

They looked like they'd been dusted with cocoa powder. No idea what type they are. Sizeable though!

They do and they look massive. I checked and an expert said Bracket Fungus AnnaLois. 🤷‍♂️ If you’re wondering who…. I rang your mum. 😂

Hahahaha! Are you trying to distract her from family history? She may find out we're distant cousins by next week 😂

😂🤣😂 Your mum said she could always spare a moment for her nephew 5 times removed. Now I understand what she meant. 😂

🤣🤣🤣🤣 They're back to 1600 and something so you must feature somewhere 🤣.

😂😂😂 How fecking old do you think I am? This friendship is over. 😂😂 Nice to know you had some tall genes in there somewhere though AnnaLois.
AnnaLois · 1 · 1d ago
Hahahaha...not you, you wally, your ancestors in the olden days 😂. If you'd seen my family, you would question whether there had ever been tall genes 😂. My kid towers over the rest of us (tall dad genes) and decided it would be funny to jump on the last family photo so they look about 8 foot tall 🙈

😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂 I do love the term olden days. No idea why. 🤷‍♂️ You say dad genes, I think you’ll find that was great great great great great great uncle Seamus from Tipperary, 7ft 2”.

Fascinating mushrooms given their size, color and shape! Very cool capture, Anna! – Alina

If they were on a plate, they could look like fancy desserts!
Forest Friday · 1 · 1d ago
They would! They also remind me of some fancy-shaped Belgian chocolates. 😋 – Alina

I remember the chocolate shops in Belgium Alina 😍

Artist’s conk—the back is smooth and white and hard—like a canvas.
AnnaLois · 2 · 1d ago
Gosh! How fascinating Jennifer. They do look sturdy but I wasn't expecting that 😊

Little stairs for the Wee Folk! Be sure to leave out a saucer of cream or honey.
AnnaLois · 1 · 23h ago
That's a lovely idea 😊

If you see a feather or a shiny stone within a few days, you know They have accepted your gift. A simple nod of acknowledging will do. Never say "Thanks" aloud as this may offend Them. According to various legends, of course.
AnnaLois · 1 · 22h ago
This all makes sense to me Mick 😊

Oh goodness. The Yankee telling the UK historian British stories. I'm so sorry.
AnnaLois · 1 · 14h ago
Don't apologise! I'm only just starting to read up on folklore so you're ahead of the curve 😀.

I've been a pagan a long time, so the lore is part of my daily walk.
AnnaLois · 1 · 7h ago
Amazing! I really need to read more as all the sites I've been to feel so special 😊

As an American, I feel like we're just stumbling over stuff, unmindful of the ancient history. I love following UK and other accounts to see the history there.
