In this vertical black-and-white photograph, a great blue heron perches in left profile with its neck tucked in on a partially submerged tree, its bare limbs extending above the surface of the pond. Gentle ripples spread across the water, while much of the pond appears nearly black as the scene remains cloaked in shadow during sunrise.
