I’d be curious as to how much of their wealth is even touched by this. The borrow-die model hides most of it.

I've actually had GOP MA residents tell me "What does Massachusetts know about taxes and patriotism?!" as if it were some sort of burn.

It's interesting, because the "exodus" in Massachusetts is easier than almost anywhere else. New Hampshire is RIGHT THERE. And lots of people who worked in MA retire to NH because Nh is a tax haven. Run by mostly lunatics, but low-tax.

People do that, usually tech people to an Austin tech job. Texas as a whole thinks Austin is too woke to really be Texas, but it suffices to teach a lot of the fleeing people that Texas is actually pretty high-cost and pretty low-services.
Yep, that's true. And it didn't happen.
Some people left— those making $200k or so— but that was likely due to affordability because the tax didn't touch them.
Property taxes are higher in NH than MA, and if you live in NH and work in MA you still pay MA income tax anyway, so it's not attractive to wealthy MAGA for *financial* reasons.
Which is why the whining that "omigod, what if our masters desert us?" from the mouthpieces for the ultrarich is just that: whining.
There are lots of reasons why high-income-tax states are attractive for business and personal location. And most low-tax states have their own failures.
To which every billionaire then responds, whimpering, “But, then I’ll be a little less insanely rich!"

Q: I know these extremely rich folks always threaten to leave if a 'wealth tax' (or something similar) is floated. Would it be possible to implement some sort of "exit tax" on those who follow thru with leaving? Or possibly an additional sales tax on properties they sell after leaving?
