I had afternoon tea many years ago at the North British Hotel in Edinburgh. Is the term North British still an acceptable term or have we moved on. I don't want to detract from either institution but as an Englishman I wonder?

No, it's not. It was primarily used for a brief period between about 1890 and 1920. No idea why.
