“What is all this really about, Vaughn?” Maya asked. “What was the point of you showing up here?” “You know what the point is.” “I don’t.” “You stole from me!” I yelled. Even with the howling wind and rain I felt like my voice echoed off the walls. It certainly rang in my ears. Maya closed her eyes and looked away from me for a second. “I’ve done a lot of things I regret, Vaughn. I have. You may not believe me but it’s true. I deeply regret hurting you. And hurting us.” She took a step forward into the rain and caressed my cheek. “Come inside. Let me explain everything to you. I know we can help each other understand.” Again my heart thumped against my chest. It had been a long time, and I hadn’t wanted to admit that I wanted her to touch me again. To show me some sort of affection, after disappearing, after all that pain, and torment. She grabbed the back of my neck and pulled me into a kiss. The cold temporarily evaporated. It was longing and wanting and familiar, and I wanted to give into that feeling. To go back to before. I grabbed her waist and pulled her closer for a moment, her arms uncoiling and wrapping around my neck. I wanted to get lost in the moment. I pulled away. “Are you going to help me climb this roof or not?” I didn’t mean to sound cold. Or maybe I did.
