15 August 1914 Germans attacked Dinant, a strategic crossing on the Meuse defended by the Belgians & French. Initial assault failed. Lt Charles de Gaulle, creator of France’s 5th Republic, was among the first to be wounded, receiving a bullet in the fibula.
