The downy woodpeckers have been doing that here (Massachusetts). I guess if you’ve got the tongue for it…
That was the conclusion I came to.
Everyone just looooves some sugar 🤭
Especially if you have a long tongue with barbs. The tongue is probably as good for collecting sugar water as bugs in wood.
We have a woodpecker regularly at our hummingbird feeder in Illinois as well! I didn't know it was common either!
It's not exactly common but it's not that unusual. It's an easy source of food for an adult when there's young in the nest to feed with normal food.
