Lindsell Train: "KKR ... was founded in 1976 by Henry Kravis and George Roberts"
Did they think Kravis was so important he got two letters to Robert's one?
Jerome Kohlberg was the 3rd and arguably most senior of the trio; he came first in the name: "Kohlberg Kravis Roberts"
In Kohlberg's WSJ obituary ("KKR Founder Jerome Kohlberg Dies at 90"), Henry Kravis was quoted as crediting him as "a true mentor to George Roberts and me" and Roberts was quoted as saying he was "proud that our firm’s name is Kohlberg Kravis Roberts"

A general point is many of the original Private Equity titans - Jerome Kohlberg, Peter Peterson, Teddy Forstmann - left the industry earlier than their younger co-founders because they had grown comfortable with what the industry had become, in terms of leverage, lifestyle, etc.
