thought the production design was great but narratively it wrote itself into a corner and just....ends...
Yes. I love the concept and I’m a fan of films that use isolation as an element of existential dread (e.g.,The Shining, Alien, 2001 A Space Odyssey, The Thing, etc.) but this film was very uneven. A first-person shooter / livesteam liminal-space horror set, ok for a game but not a full length film.
I would go so far as to say that The Oldest View (available on YT) is a better, more cohesive, more relatable realization of the Backrooms vision. A true story arc is needed for a full length film, not the messy hash put forth in Backrooms. Having said that I did enjoy parts of Backrooms very much.

I totally agree. I am so glad for the young director getting a massive hit, but this film did not work for me. It had moments of real terror, but then it didn't follow through, IMO. Glad I watched it, but I won't be buying a copy to watch again.
