What's a popular sandwich from your region?
Everything is popular here, but I would say Walleye sandwiches are more popular here than most places. And it's a pretty diverse area actually, so there are a ton of Eastern and central European influences here, and Norwegian, and German, etc.
That sounds incredible! I just googled the sandwich and it looks delicious.
There was a restaurant/Bar half a block from my house for decades, and it was known as the best Walleye in the Twin Cities. It closed not too long ago and is now another restaurant. It's good, but it's more fancy now and doesn't have that divey bar lunch spot vibe anymore!
Hopefully it was because the owners wanted to retire and not because they were forced to close. I guess there's a contest now for who comes the closest to what they produced and the atmosphere they served up.
It was a combination of one of the owners dying, the lease expiring and the new lease being higher, and fewer people shopping in the area. It's extra sad because of the timing. The neighborhood has a bunch of new businesses now and foot traffic is back up!
Did the closure occur before, during or after the covid pandemic?
It was in 2024. The area was in transition & a lot of stores had left during & after COVID. Most of them were large national retailers. It took some time for all those stores to get reoccupied by small local shops now. I have lived here for a very long time and it's the best now it has ever been!
I'm glad the changes were mostly positive.
