Recent trade figures from the Bicycle Association revealed a 36% year-on-year increase in electric cargo bike sales in 2025 in the UK, compared with an increase of 2% for e-bikes. Analysis from Clean Cities, using Transport for London data, reveals that cargo bike journeys in the capital doubled between 2022 and 2024. It’s no longer a fringe development; it’s a central feature of the modern transport landscape on urban streets, particularly during school drop off in big cities like London. However, despite rising sales, the UK lags significantly behind European leaders such as Germany and France. Figures from 2022 show that just 4,000 cargo bikes were sold in the UK, compared with 70,000 in France and 90,000 in Germany. Industry experts point to a “storage desert” as a significant inhibitor. A family-sized cargo bike does not fit in existing standard cycle hangars. This means that families living in flats and apartments are effectively “locked out” of the market. London is a good example.
