The Amazing Worlds of Doctor Who · 0 · 59m agoNot in 1981 there weren't. Peter Davison had begun filming his first full series as the Fifth Doctor (which debuted in 1982).
There were stage play and movie incarnations, but in 1981 the BBC only really recognised the five specific TV Doctors.
And, yes, it was on a long time! 👍

Well, maybe "ignore" isn't the right word. "Forget about" would be a better description.
Peter Davison wasn't a very credible Doctor in MHO, that or I'd passed the point of children's TV.

You have to give credit for that. Such a great idea and a brilliant jumping on point for anyone who hadn't had the chance to see the earlier Doctors (I was a Pertwee initiate).
It was an excellent idea - my youngest brother only knew Tom Baker at the time. It was a season that appealed to our whole family - even our non-"Who" viewer watched the entire run.
Dr Who was good until Peter Davison. Then it went downhill fast
I don’t think it was his fault. I think the writing, script editing and general production of the show weren’t as strong during his time as they had been in the 70s.
Yes, it changed a lot and following on from the other 4 DRs could not have been easy. In my memory of the series, they seemed to have a much larger presence, especially Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker; they were larger-than-life characters.
The first four Doctors were on TV far more than their successors. Hartnell/Troughton were a regular presence in the TV schedules for almost the whole year round; Pertwee and Baker were on for half the year (plus repeats).
Davison and his successors were on screen for 13/14 weeks a year (or less).
So excited to watch this at the age of 11, having never seen any stories from before Tom Baker’s era. My only disappointment was that they showed Logopolis for the fourth Doctor, which had only been on recently. Was really hoping for an early Tom classic.
